   Este inmigrante ruso, de raices armenias y judias, llega a los Estados Unidos procedente del mundo teatral europeo y alli, en Broadway, reemprende una labor que, a comienzos del sonido, lo llevara a Holly wood, contratado por la Paramount. En la Meca del Cine se pone a la tarea de “inventar” el cine sonoro. En efecto, sus brillantes ideas, visuales y tecnicas, colaboraron en la labor de eliminar de las peliculas sonoras las servidumbres que amenazaban con convertirlo en una solemne y anquilosada manifestacion artistica.

   Repasar la filmografia de Mamoulian es un trabajo estimulante, desde las iniciales y atrevidas Applause (1929) y Las calles de la ciudad (City Streets, 1931), hasta el extraordinario musical con el que cierra su carrera, La bella de Moscu (Silk Stockings, 1957). Mamoulian fue, tambien, el que dirigio la mejor pelicula interpretada por la divina Greta Garbo, La reina Cristina de Suecia (Queen Christina, 1933), un precursor del color en el cine con La feria de la vanidad (Becky Sharp, 1935), y, en fin, el realizador de tres westerns extraordinarios, a prueba de tiempos y modas. Particularmente el ultimo de ellos, El signo del zorro, es un ejemplo de buen cine: con un guion medido, un sentido del ritmo y la planificacion mas que sobresalientes, construye Mamoulian una obra de aventuras californianas que, en el futuro, sera largamente imitada pero nunca igualada.

Según el Dr. Fernando Ortiz, "Até" procede de "a", prefijo sustantivador; y "te", estar plano, percutir, adorar. El "ate" es un círculo de madera de unas catorce o más pulgadas de diámetro; tiene un borde labrado en el mismo cuerpo de la madera y asemeja una bandeja; tiene cuatro puntos marcados en los extremos de dos diámetros perpendiculares; esos puntos son o representan las cuatro esquinas del mundo, los cuatro puntos cardinales. Hemos observado un Tablero de Ifá sin marca alguna en los bordes, otro tiene en cada uno de los cuatro puntos cardinales dos cauris boca arriba incrustados. Ortiz presenta uno en la Pág. 169 del Tomo III de su magna obra "Los Instrumentos de la Música Afrocubana", que tiene en cada punto incrustada una cara. El propio Ortiz señala que a veces tiene una sola cara o cabeza "de Echu o de Elégguá, el orísha que todo lo ve", y que esas cuatro cabezas o puntos cardinales son (los Echu meri bayé o "cuatro caminos de Echu") y la concepción metafísica del cosmos". El punto Norte es Obatalá; el Sur es Oddúa; el Este, Changó y el Oeste Echu, etc. 'Para más detalles consulte a Ortiz. Sobre el tablero echa el babalawó un polvo hecho de colmillo de elefante al que llaman "yefá". En Caibarién, Las Villas, hubo un congo que usaba harina de maíz. Nos dicen que también se usa polvo de arroz unido a otras substancias. Nosotros hemos visto un polvo muy fino que parece harina de maíz con alguna otra substancia blanca. Ese yefá o polvo del Até es regado en todo el tablero de manera que forme una capa fina, para lo cual se usa una escobilla que parece de estropajo de soga. A continuación, el babalawó que está registrando (sentado en el suelo con su Até entre las piernas, sobre paño blanco y alfombra), sienta delante de él a una mujer que tenga una mano de Orula, le pone una toalla sobre las piernas y encima un ékuelé, entonces él toma en ambas manos varias semillas de corojo llamadas "ekine", los cuales son rogados, para después agarrarlos y soltarlos con la mano derecha; ese trabajo permite un conteo de las semillas o corojos africanos que quedaron o no fueron agarrados con la dicha mano derecha. Ese conteo da una numeración y posiblemente un rayado en el yefá del Até, que sirve para sacar las letras u odus del Ifá. Esas letras son aplicadas, previa adaptación intelectual y el correspondiente "aché", al sujeto o al asunto que se registra o investiga. Eso o mejor dicho, algo así, es lo que se hace con ese oráculo llamado "Ekine de Orula o de Ifá". Hemos logrado ver el registro del año 1956, para "ver" a Orula hablar por "Ekine Ifá". Es una labor agotadora intelectual y físicamente. La primera sesión principió con saludos, sacrificios y bajadas de Orula al Até, seguida del registro. Orula en persona habló por los "Ekines" en el "Até de Ifá". Esa sesión terminó a las tres de la tarde y duraba desde las seis de la mañana. A las cuatro continuaron los babalawós con la segunda sesión que terminó a las seis de la tarde, pues solamente se registra durante el día. Observamos que los sacerdotes pasaron diez horas con atención concentrada y fuerte trabajo intelectual para lograr la fiel interpretación de los "odus". Esos "ódun" son la palabra de Orula, quien era mudo de pequeño, pero al hacerse adolescente Olofi le pegó dieciséis veces, una por cada año que tenía, y el muchacho pronunció un ódu de cada vez formando así las dieciséis letras primeras de su propio oráculo.
